A series of mock-up poster designs by legendary graphic designer Saul Bass for Stanley Kubrick‘s ‘The Shining

Stanley Kubrick is well known for his heavy involvement in marketing with any film he produced, from advertisement to hand picking the cinema’s the films would be shown in. For his 1980’s master horror ‘The Shining’, Kubrick commissioned legendary graphic designer Saul Bass to produce the movie poster.

Bass already was well known for his movie poster designs using bold colour, stand out type and imagery took to the challenge and produced a range of different outcomes for Kubrick to choose from. A selection of these first drafts have been released which include designs encompassing a pointillist style, with imagery of the famous maze where Jack Torrance chases his family through once the madness of solitude sets in.

The series is also accompanied by notes from the director (who doesn’t hold back on his criticism) and a letter from Bass explaining why he chose to include the five different designs. Although this story is by no means breaking news, we felt it was too good not to share.
